In the fall of 2012, TOLA helped train PICO California affiliates statewide, in their efforts to turn out unlikely voters to support Governor Jerry Brown’s Proposition 30.

As a result of the relationship forged in 2012, in the summer of 2013, TOLA was invited to Bakersfield to help PICO California organize for their “Pathway to Citizenship” immigration reform campaign. TOLA Fellows went door-to-door, phone banked and engaged Bakersfield residents in urging them to attend a community forum. The event was organized to urge Republican Majority Whip, Kevin McCarthy, Congressional Representative for the Bakersfield area, to garner the necessary votes needed to guarantee that the national immigration reform bill would be voted on and passed by Congress. TOLA fellows had the opportunity to knock on Congressmen McCarthy’s home and speak to his wife and neighbors.

Over 3,000 community members attended the forum, and although the Congressman was not able to attend, a clear message was sent to him on behalf of his constituents.
